Hi all,
I've deleted some posts being unrelated to this curent topic. Hope no one will write sth like those again!
Now, let's come back to the topic. We're talking about the ways to improve our vocabulary.
There’re many methods to improve our vacabulary. I agree with JTF on learning new words by reading sth such as newspapers, magazines, books, … When seeing a new word, I prefer trying to guess its meaning before looking it up in the dictionary. Sometime, words in specific sentences are understandable, though we don’t know exactly what they mean.
For people who don’t like reading, maybe watching television is a solution. Watching program in English, especially films with subtitles is very helpful. By watching, you not only know the pronunciation but also would be able to understand new words. I suggest that you take note of these words first, and then have a look at a dictionary for the true meaning. etc. Once you had a PC or TV cab, it is simple to carry on, isn’t it ?
One problem is that do we have to learn new word regularly ? How many words should we learn everyday ? I think it depends on each of us. I used to watching to news everynight, but I didn’t try to learn by heart new words. Perhaps, the frequency of the appearances is an important factor. Although learning by heart would increase your quantity of words, it means nothing than the input. If you don't use words you know, (I means to output ), can they be remembered for a long time ? etc.
How about your opinion ? Any recommendation ?
