Juventus chief Giraudo: Roma offered us Cassano
tribalfootball.com - September 30, 2005

Juventus director Antonio Giraudo has revealed AS Roma offered them striker Antonio Cassano in the summer.
He said: "We asked Roma for Mancini, but they explained to us that he was not for sale.

"Roma then has proposed to us Cassano, but we do not have space for him and we could not make the deal happen."

Fiorentina concern as Sanz wants Frey back at Parma
tribalfootball.com - September 30, 2005

Fiorentina are in panic-mode after it emerged that new Parma owner Lorenzo Sanz wants to bring goalkeeper Sebastien Frey back to the club in January.
Frey is on-loan at Fiorentina this season, but Sanz wants to recall the Frenchman to satisfy Parma supporters.

Parma chief Oreste Cinquini played down the reports last night: "There are many clubs interested in Frey.

"As for our plans for the club, it's too soon to say. But there will be several operations."

Barcelona star Ronaldinho can't wait for Inter Milan-Juventus showdown
tribalfootball.com - September 30, 2005

Barcelona star Ronaldinho admits he is a big fan of Serie A football.
The Brazilian recently signed a new contract with Barca, but remains one of the most sought after players amongst Italy's biggest clubs.

Ronaldinho can't wait for Sunday's showdown between Juventus and Inter Milan and declared: "I won't miss the challenge between Juve and Inter. No way!

"My loyalties are split. I'm a fan of Adriano and also Emerson."

Inter Milan's Solari laughs off incredible miss
tribalfootball.com - September 30, 2005

Inter Milan midfielder Santiago Solari admits he can't believe his miss against Rangers on Wednesday night.

"I have absolutely no justification! I'll go straight on to the comedy shows with that clip," laughed the Inter star.

Coach Roberto Mancini suggested Solari was "tired" when he missed the empty net in the 1-0 Champions League victory, but he was having none of it.

"I must thank Mancini for trying to protect me, but I really have nothing to say, it was awful. I did have bronchitis this week, but I feel good and played well for the rest of the game."

The former Real Madrid midfielder has struggled to find space in the Nerazzurri squad and insists he is not frustrated.

"In all big clubs there is a lot of competition for places, so I am not concerned by that. I am happy when the team wins and hope to help them achieve those aims."

Moratti: Tough for Inter Milan in front of empty stadium
tribalfootball.com - September 30, 2005

Inter Milan patron Massimo Moratti has defended his team's scratchy performance in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Rangers in front of an empty San Siro stadium.

"I cannot stress enough how difficult it is to play in an empty stadium, as this atmosphere plays strange tricks on the players," said Moratti. "It's a bit like a training session and you can't gauge how the game is going. It raises the tension and doesn't feel so much like sport."

Moratti was in the stands and also held his head in his hands when Solari made that astonishing miss.

"Clearly at the time everyone's reaction was one of incredulity. I spoke to Solari and he said he might want to change his shirt number, as he can't believe how unlucky he is at the moment!"

Some sections of the Italian Press have suggested that Roberto Mancini is rotating the squad - leaving Adriano on the bench against Rangers - because his focus is on the Scudetto.

"I honestly am very fond of the Champions League and consider it an important competition, but it would be a great joy to win either of them," added Moratti. "We are certainly not snubbing Europe and Mancini rotates the squad because he feels it is necessary."

Udinese Allow Iaquinta Back On The Team
9/28/2005 9:42:00 PM
Udinese announced that Vincenzo Iaquinta will be available to play again starting this weekend when the Friuliani host on-form Lazio.
“Chairman Pozzo renounces to sell Iaquinta in January, and therefore renounces to make any possible money on the player. If Cosmi wants to, he can select him for Saturday’s match,” read a statement released by the Serie A club this evening.

The Calabria born striker was booted from the squad after he broke talks regarding the renewal of his contract, that expires in June 2007.

From the moment the decision to drop Iaquinta was taken, Udinese lost all three of the matches they played.

Lippi rules out Roma veteran Panucci
tribalfootball.com - October 3, 2005

Italy coach Marcello Lippi says he won't consider an Azzurri recall for AS Roma veteran Christian Panucci.
"I won't bring in Panucci, as I am giving my faith to two young defenders - Christian Zaccardo and Aimo Diana - and want to stick with them," said Lippi, who had a slanging match with Panucci through the press last month.

Recent Azzurri performances have shown a clear weakness in defence, where Palermo right-back Zaccardo's errors proved costly against Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. Many have called for experienced Roma veteran Panucci to be recalled, but those appeals are set to be ignored.

Udinese will sell Iaquinta for £8M
tribalfootball.com - October 3, 2005

Udinese are still ready to sell striker Vincenzo Iaquinta in January.

The Italy international signed a new deal through to 2010, but it's understood the compromise was reached after Udinese chiefs agreed they would not block a move away should an offer of at least £8 million arrive in January.

Patron Giampaolo Pozzo came in for criticism after freezing Iaquinta out of the squad in what the Players' Association dubbed "an illegal tactic."

"We have clarified the situation between ourselves and that is the important thing," insisted the forward.

Udinese director general Pietro Leonardi also added: "The club really appreciated the common sense and approach of Iaquinta's father in creating the understanding atmosphere we all hoped for."

Perez won't accept Real Madrid blast from Inter Milan's Figo
tribalfootball.com - October 3, 2005

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has waved away stinging criticism from Inter Milan winger Luis Figo.
Portugal international Figo declared last week: "At Real Madrid, the objective is not to win but to promote the name of Madrid."

Asked about Figo's comments, Perez said: "I know Figo and I do not believe he would say such a thing."

Galliani: Winning will stop AC Milan critics
tribalfootball.com - October 3, 2005

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani admits criticism of the club's inconsistent start to the season has stung.
Before last night's game against Reggina, Galliani said: "The criticism is over the top. If we were another club, it wouldn't be half as bad as it is.

"It all comes as exasperated and magnified. But we have one way in order to silence all this: to win.

"We cannot allow ourselves to lose like the others, we must win and play well so that the critics stop."

Azzurri: Lippi recalls Blasi Sunday 2 October, 2005

Marcello Lippi has recalled Daniele Bonera and Manuele Blasi for next week’s World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Moldova.

Parma defender Bonera makes his comeback after injury problems, while Blasi could be used as a full-back in the same position he has been adopting at Juventus over the last month.

As expected, Roma duo Antonio Cassano and Christian Panucci will not play a part in these international tests, but Vincenzo Iaquinta is called after the end of his contract dispute with Udinese.

Compared to the recent call-ups, Palermo’s injured defender Andrea Barzagli and Reggina man Giandomenico Mesto are dropped.

Italy will welcome Slovenia to Palermo’s Stadio Barbera on Saturday evening, while Moldova visit Lecce’s Stadio Via del Mare on Wednesday October 12.

Italy squad:

Gk: De Sanctis (Udinese), Peruzzi (Lazio)

D: Bonera (Parma), F Cannavaro (Juventus), Grosso (Palermo), Materazzi (Inter), Nesta (Milan), Zaccardo (Palermo), Zambrotta (Juventus)

M: Barone (Palermo), Blasi (Juventus), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Diana (Sampdoria), Gattuso (Milan), Pirlo (Milan)

F: Del Piero (Juventus), Gilardino (Milan), Iaquinta (Udinese), Toni (Fiorentina), Totti (Roma), Vieri (Milan)

Lazio skipper Di Canio blasts "attitude" away from home
tribalfootball.com - October 3, 2005

Lazio captain Paolo Di Canio has questioned his team's mental toughness away from home after Saturday's defeat at Udinese.

Di Canio lamented: "We suffer from an attitude problem. The sorrow is this, because if we had carried the game onto the end at 0-0, we even could have scored very late and won.

"The problem is that if we're away from home and concede a goal we give up, and this is not good enough. At home we react, also due to the aid of the fans, but away we have a poor attitude and we must work on this.

"However this is a beautiful group, we suffer all together when things do not go well."

Lazio coach Delio Rossi backs Di Canio's comments: "Paolo is right. We must improve our mentality, because the differences in performance between us at home and away cannot be explained.

"We must work very hard on this aspect."

Inter Milan's Materazzi apologises to Ibrahimovic
tribalfootball.com - October 4, 2005

Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi has apologised to Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his horror tackle on Sunday.

"We clarified ourselves after the match. We hugged, and smiled at each other. It was a foul that occurs during a game. He jumped over me, and I tried to anticipate him, but hit him on the ankle instead. This is how the foul went," said the Inter defender.

After the game, Juve midfielder Pavel Nedved called the foul "a horrendous tackle, something that shouldn't happen on the pitch", while dg Luciano Moggi blasted Inter as they failed to apologize for the foul. "Apologies? What apologies," he said.

Inter Milan's Zanetti agrees Juventus move
tribalfootball.com - October 4, 2005

Inter Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti has verbally agreed a deal with Juventus for next season.
Zanetti is off contract from Inter in the summer and has reportedly agreed to join Juve after seeing his relationship with coach Roberto Mancini gradually wane in recent months.

A pre-contract agreement of four years worth £2 million-a-season is being drawn up by Juve's money-men for Zanetti to sign on January 1.

Roma chief outlines Cassano contract dates
tribalfootball.com - October 4, 2005

AS Roma sports chief Daniele Prade hopes to have Antonio Cassano secured to a new contract inside the next "15 days".
Prade revealed: "With Cassano's agent, with which we now have a great relationship, we are taking two weeks in order to work on the contract.

Angry Toldo Attacks Mancini's Choices
10/4/2005 6:46:00 AM
The former international goalkeeper has lost his patience and wants to reclaim the starting position in the Inter squad.
This has been a quiet season so far for Francesco Toldo who has been relegated to the bench by newcomer Julio Cesar. Now, after weeks without any first team action, the Italian goalkeeper spoke about his current situation.

“I’m out due to technical choice: if only I knew it before I would have made different choices. If at the start of the year Inter had told me about this situation, I would have made other choices. Instead I was told other things. Now I know that I don’t play due to technical choices, but I hope that there is no prejudice against me.

“Last year I won the Coppa Italia as a starter. I pushed the cart for many years and for Inter I gave up the national team. However, with Buffon’s injury, if Lippi would call me back, I would return. But I don’t play and I can’t show my value.

Toldo believes that with this year’s defence, he would have done well too.

“This year the defensive department is stronger. With Samuel we strengthened ourselves; if only I had such a defence...

“I don’t feel inferior to him (Julio Cesar): he’s young, but once to become an Inter goalkeeper you needed experience…”

Lucarelli: No New Deal Yet
10/3/2005 1:48:00 PM
Livorno striker Cristiano Lucarelli has denied that he’s agreed a new contract with the club.
Livorno president Aldo Spinelli claimed before Sunday’s clash with Fiorentina that last season’s Serie A top scorer had penned a new deal taking him to 2010.
But Lucarelli said: "It’s not that the president is a liar. He's simply an optimist by nature.

"I can only say I've not signed."

He added: "Although the agreement has not been reached yet, there is a proposal by the club.

"There are no problems to eventually reach an agreement."

Moratti Keeping The Faith...
10/3/2005 3:49:00 PM
Inter supremo Massimo Moratti has not lost all of his Scudetto hopes, even though his team suffered their second defeat of the season last night.
“We lacked determination, a determination Juventus had. But you can’t confront last night’s loss with the one we suffered at Palermo,” he said.

“We could have equalized in the second half when we played well, but Juve deserved the win. However, we must still believe, especially given the sacrifices the club made to build such a team,” he added.

Inter now trail league leaders Juventus by six points

Toni Surprised By Unexpected Start
10/4/2005 6:43:00 AM
The Viola are the surprise team of the season.
Fiorentina could not hope for a better start to the season as the Tuscan side is currently enjoying the second place in Serie A with Milan, 5 points behind the seemingly unstoppable Juventus.

“We hoped to start well, but we did not think we would do it like this. Now we hope that we are the real surprise of the league. Our strength arrives from the group because we all do well, also the substitutes. And we also have a really valid coach.”

Even Toni’s personal season is going extremely well, as the Italian international is currently topping the Serie A top-scorer list along with Sampdoria’s Bonazzoli.

“I’m very pleased. It’s the confirmation that I have behind my back a team which puts me in a condition to score.”
"Cassano is an important player for us and now we will see in these 15 days what happens. We will put on the table all that we can afford."

Juventus chief Moggi: AC Milan a major title threat
tribalfootball.com - October 5, 2005

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi admits AC Milan remain a major title threat.

"Milan are always a rival you must respect."

Papa Materazzi: My son's no killer!

Marco Materazzi's Dad insists the Inter Milan defender isn't a "killer".
Materazzi was blasted by Juventus players and coaches after his horror challenge on Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Inter's 2-0 defeat, which forced the Swede off the pitch.

But Giuseppe Materazzi said: "The tackle was made and Marco took the ball. He did not want injure the player.

"There was no malice in the tackle and the referee was right not to send him off.

"My son is not the killer that many want to paint him as."

Politicians debate Azzurri status of Inter Milan's Materazzi
tribalfootball.com - October 5, 2005

Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi's horror challenge on Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has led to calls for him to be banned from the national team!

Politicians spent yesterday debating the tackle, with senator Roberto Salerno stating: "A positive style for the National team must exist, above all if we want to give examples to boys.

"In this, Materazzi does not deserve the recognition. A great champion knows how to avoid violent behavior which was shown in his tackle on Ibrahimovic."

However, fellow senator Ignazio La Russa said: "The talk of describing this boy as a criminal is exaggerated. He is national team player, who plays with passion and does not deserve these public attacks."

Baggio: AC Milan's Maldini should have 3 Ballon d'Ors
tribalfootball.com - October 5, 2005

Italian legend Roberto Baggio says he can't believe AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini has never won the Ballon d'Or.

Baggio has won the award twice and said yesterday: "There have been three years in which I was convinced Paolo would win the Ballon d'Or. I can't believe he's never won one.

"I have always said that for seriousness, intelligence, bravery, career, victories, education and all that that he has done and still does, Paolo deserves that acknowledgment.

"And sincerely I am surprised myself by the fact that he has still not won it."

Ciro Ferrara: A Tribute
10/4/2005 9:27:00 AM
The 2004/005 season marked the end of the career of one of the greatest defenders ever to grace Serie A, Ciro Ferrara. David Morabito remembers him...

Ferrara, with his Caesar-like appearance, marshalled some of the most formidable defensive lines in Serie A history. While the great Napoli side of the late 80’s and early 90’s is often referred to as ‘Maradona’s Napoli,’ most people didn’t realise that while Maradona was scoring goals at one end, Ferrara was putting a stop to them at the other. But such was Ferrara’s career that he spent most of his years playing in the shadow of superstars. The likes of Maradona, Baggio and Del Piero stole the spotlight and took the plaudits, while Ferrara toiled away tirelessly at the back.

While most other clubs didn’t see value in Maradona’s team mates after his career ended, Juventus realised Ciro Ferrara would be a worthy addition to their squad and signed him on for the 1994/1995 season. It took Ferrara only two seasons with the Turin side before he helped them to the Champions League trophy in the 1995/1996 season, against an almighty Ajax outfit. He would go on to score the Bianconeri seven schedutto’s, an intercontinental cup, a UEFA cup, a UEFA super cup, two Italian cups and five Italian Super Cups.

As well as his domineering physical presence in his own box, Ferrara was also an intimidating force in the opponent’s area, often making space for Juve’s strikers and even chipping in with the odd goal. Ferrara was a player who exuded confidence which characterized the Juventus teams of the 90’s. This was reciprocated by the cool finishing of Del Piero, and the relaxed demeanour of the silver haired cigar smoking coach Marcello Lippi.

The calm Ferrara displayed under pressure along with his perfectly timed challenges were in stark contrast to his more aggressive, bone-crunching partner in crime Paulo Montero. Their different, yet equally effective styles made for one of the most feared defensive partnerships in European football. One of their most stunning displays came in the 2002/2003 Champions League final, when the aging duo held off AC Milan’s almighty strike pairing of Andrea Shevchenko and Pippo Inzaghi for 120 minutes, before Juventus lost on penalties.

At 38 years of age and after 500 Serie A appearances, Ciro Ferrara hung up his boots and called an end to a marvellous career spanning 3 decades. Ciro Ferrara’s will not only be remembered for being one of the most gifted defender’s of his generation, but also for carrying himself in an exemplary manner on and off the field.

tribalfootball.com - October 6, 2005

"People have spoken about a farewell match for Fiorentina. We'll see about that. For now, I just need to recover."

Juventus are spending international week discussing a new contract with coach Fabio Capello.
Capello's current deal expires in 2007, but Juve are keen to extend that through to 2009 and also bump up his salary to £2 million-a-year.

Roma hope for Cassano agreement tomorrow
tribalfootball.com - October 6, 2005

AS Roma chiefs will meet with the agent of Antonio Cassano tomorrow to discuss his new contract.
The two parties are agreed on several points over the deal, including a buyout clause which would be set at £5 million and come into effect at the end of this season.

However, Cassano's agent and lawyer, Beppe Bozzo, is still unhappy with the terms being offered by Roma. The capital club will not go higher than £2.4 million-a-year, while Cassano is seeking closer to £3 million-a-year to re-sign.

Some of Italy's great modern day strikers have offered their advice to Inter Milan's shot-shy Adriano.
The Brazilian international has failed to find the net in Serie A competition this season and ex-Juventus star Paolo Rossi said: "It looks like he has lost his accuracy. He must keep trying to hit the target. He can't let his head drop."

Alessandro Altobelli said: "The club must find him a winger who can deliver the right crosses to him."

Gianluca Vialli said: "As a fan of Inter, I won't offer my opinion on Adriano. I have confidence in Roberto Mancini that he knows how to find the best of Adriano again."

Palermo president Zamparini urges fans not to barrack Fiorentina's Toni
tribalfootball.com - October 7, 2005

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini is urging fans not to barrack Luca Toni on his return to the club with Fiorentina next week.

It will be Toni's first appearance at Palermo since he left the Sicilian club in the summer and despite a war of words through the press, Zamparini insists he regards the striker as "a son".

"The love for him has turned to hatred. This is what happens in football. But Toni has not betrayed anyone, it is just the rules of the market," said Zamparini.

"There has never been any poison between Toni and myself. It is those outside who have exaggerated it. If he comes to see me, I will embrace him like a son.

"Toni has given a lot to Palermo and I will be disappointed of he is booed when he returns with Fiorentina."

Palermo's Zaccardo thanks Lippi for backing him
tribalfootball.com - October 10, 2005

Palermo fullback Christian Zaccardo admits his goal scoring performance for Italy against Slovenia on Saturday still won't dampen the criticism of his selection.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi was heavily criticised for preferring Zaccardo to Roma's Christian Panucci and Lazio fullback Massimo Oddo and the Palermo favourite admitted: "I know that for the some even the most shining performance wouldn't be enough, but I have remained always calm, thanks also to what Lippi has transmitted to me.

"And just for that, I want to dedicate the goal to him and all the team. Sure, I know that scoring a goal won't be enough for me to go to Germany, but I hope to stay in this squad because I'm sure that we will do well."

Inter Milan ahead of Man Utd for Ballack
tribalfootball.com - October 10, 2005

Inter Milan are convinced they have an advantage over Manchester United in the chase for Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack.

Bayern have confirmed they expect Ballack to make a decision over their new contract offer this month, with the Germany captain's current deal expiring in the summer.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sees Ballack as a successor to club captain Roy Keane and has the club's money-men drawing up a pre-contract proposal to table the midfielder's representatives on January 1.

However, Inter patron Massimo Moratti is convinced he can land Ballack after agreeing personal terms with the player last year. Only Bayern's stubbornness in not selling saw the deal fall through.

It's understood Ballack is seeking around £3.5 million-a-year.

Palermo coach Del Neri excited by potential
tribalfootball.com - October 10, 2005

Palermo coach Gigi del Neri is convinced the club can take their place among the Serie A elite.

"Considering what I've seen from my players in terms of intensity and the quality of their performance, I think we deserved to win all our games so far this season," said Del Neri. "Palermo are a great side and we can prove that."

The Rosanero already impressed last season when Francesco Guidolin took them to their first ever UEFA Cup qualification, but despite the departure of the tactician and top scorer Luca Toni, they continue to hurt the top sides.

"The game that most impressed me was the 3-2 victory against Inter, without a doubt," said the former Roma and Chievo Coach. "I didn't appreciate what happened away to Lazio, as a team of this quality cannot throw away a 2-0 lead."

That 4-2 result at the Stadio Olimpico remains their only defeat of the season so far, although they have slowed down of late with a 2-2 home draw against Empoli last weekend.

"We needed the break for international duty, even if a lot of my players will be busy with those World Cup qualifiers. There's a busy calendar ahead of us and it'll give me a chance to test out some members of the team who haven't played as much recently."

AC Milan striker Inzaghi: I'm back!
tribalfootball.com - October 10, 2005

AC Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi banged home a hat-trick on his competitive return from long-term injury on Saturday.

Inzaghi featured for Franco Baresi's Primavera team and scored three goals in the 4-1 win over Legnano.

"I no longer feel pain," he said after playing 80 minutes of the match. "I am cured and today I can finally say that I am once again a football player."

The former Juventus player has been troubled by recurring injuries over the last two years, undergoing surgery on his knee and ankle.

Spalletti Confident Of Cassano Deal
10/10/2005 4:47:00 AM
Luciano Spalletti believes that Antonio Cassano will put pen-to-paper on a new deal at Roma, despite the slow progress of negotiations between the player and the club.
The striker's current deal expires next summer and fears are growing at the capital club that he could leave for nothing next summer.

Rumours suggested that the club had instructed Spalletti to not pick Cassano until his contract talks had been concluded, but that move never materialised.

Spalletti is confident that a breakthrough in negotiations will be found, although he admitted that he does not know how they are going.

"I think there are all the components needed so that Cassano will sign a new contract," said Spalletti.

"I don’t know the details of the talks between him and the club but I’m confident and I really wish everything will be solved in a positive way.

"In a few days there will be a meeting and we will see what will happen but, I repeat, I believe the player will sign."

Lippi Ready For World Cup Magic
10/9/2005 2:53:00 PM
Italy boss Marcello Lippi revealed who he believes the favorites to win the 2006 World Cup are, but thinks the Azzurri are ready to surprise everyone.
“Any person with some sort of good-sense knows that the favorite is Brasil,” Lippi told reporters the day after Italy clinched a birth to 2006 World Cup with a win over Slovenia.

“But I enjoy the fact that players like Ronaldo place Italy in the first four or five teams. You’ll see the real magic will be the World Cup,” added the former Juventus trainer.

Italy end their qualification round against Moldova on Wednesday, a game in which Lippi is expected to give his second-string players a chance to shine.
