Agnelli family boost Juve coffers? Saturday 14 October, 2006 (Channel4)

Juventus will be helped back to the top of Italian and European football with investment from the Agnelli family after 13 years of self-sufficiency.

The club is owned by the Turin-based FIAT patrons for more than 80 years, but has been running on its own cash flow since the mid-1990s, one of the only Italian sides to operate in this manner.

However, the demotion to Serie B as a result of the Calciopoli scandal has cost the Bianconeri approximately £87m and the last quarter ended with Juve in the red to the tune of £24.6m.

Robbed of the money from the Champions League and Serie A, the Turin giants need fresh funds to continue paying the top star salaries enjoyed in the Second Division by the likes of David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon.

Sponsorship contracts are also under a process of renegotiation following the drop down into Serie B.

This morning’s ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ suggests that the Agnelli family will dip into the coffers to begin the restructuring process, starting from the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Not only will the unpopular arena have its capacity reduced and the running track removed, but it’ll also turn into a Premiership-style business park with shops and convention centres that should eventually help finance Juventus.

Director Jean Claude Blanc will present his plan of action in a couple of months and has already warned it’ll be a long-term project aimed at taking Juve back to Scudetto and Champions League contenders within five years.

“We’ll indicate the financial necessities, then we shall see how to satisfy them. There are many ways of achieving this, not just with investments from the club owners, who also want to see Juventus back on top again,” he commented.

Another option is for the Agnelli family to sell more of its shares to Libyan company Lafico, who already own 7.5 per cent of the stock.

Treviso 0-1 Juventus
Juventus have moved off the bottom of the Serie B table after a 1-0 win at Treviso in the Monday night game. Cristiano Zanetti grabbed his first goal for the club since his summer switch to take the Calciopoli-hit outfit to minus one point in the standings after their fifth straight League win.
Treviso started the game brightly as Juventus took their time to settle at the Stadio Omobono Tenni. However, once the Old Lady did find their feet then they dominated the rest of the first period. Alex Del Piero, in search of his 200th club goal, found the back of the net but it was rightly ruled out for offside. The captain then should have scored for real when he was one on one with Avramov, yet the ‘keeper did well to deny him. Juve did take the lead though soon after when Mauro Camoranesi’s cross was met by Zanetti in minute 38. The half ended with Russotto and Camoranesi exchanging shots.
The home side started the second period well, but Gigi Buffon kept out efforts from Vascak, Viali and Fava. And as the tie went on, Juventus – who also had a David Trezeguet strike disallowed – played down the clock and almost doubled their lead late on with Trez and a Del Piero chip.
Scorer: Zanetti 31 (J)
Treviso: Avramov; Valdez, Viali, Cottafava, Giuliatto; Vascak, Guigou, Gissi (Moro 74), Russotto; Beghetto, Fava (Acquafresca 74)
Juventus: Buffon; Birindelli (Chiellini 74), Kovac, Boumsong, Balzaretti; Camoranesi (Marchionni 83), Paro, Zanetti, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet

On Saturday it’s Juventus - Pescara

Following their draw with Napoli, the Bianconeri return to the Olimpico on Saturday with their eyes firmly fixed on top spot. Currently lying third from bottom and still looking for their first championship win of the season, Pescara provide the day’s opposition. The men from Abruzzo, who began their campaign with a one point penalty, have already made a change at the helm this term; after the sixth round of games, and a fourth defeat of the season at the hands of Modena, the club parted company with coach Ballardini, appointing Aldo Ammazzalorso in his place.

Despite the quality of their squad, Pescara have had trouble getting things going early on in the season. Their star man is without a doubt Marco Ferrante. Full of running, the former Torino forward is an old pro in the box and can strike home when least expected. Rigoni - formerly of Juventus - is another interesting player, a dangerous prospect either behind the front two or out on the left wing in the 4-4-2 favoured by Ballardini. The pick of the midfield is Moscardi, a strong player who shows quality in both defence and attack, while Gonella and Delli Carri - another ex-Torino man - are the shining lights in defence, along with De Martis at left back.

It’s easy to predict the pattern of the game: Pescara will look to give away as little space as possible, while attempting to hit Juventus on the break. The Bianconeri will look to impose their game early on, with the added advantage of playing on home soil: Juventus have won all of their games so far at the Olimpico and Saturday will be no different as they look to continue their impressive run.

Match day 14: The main event

Genoa–Juventus, match day fourteen’s early game, is without a doubt one of the most eagerly awaited clashes of the season, both for the history and tradition it represents, and for the fact that it’s a head to head between two of the championship’s most serious promotion contenders. The Bianconeri arrive in Marassi still short of a number of big names, but buoyed by the conviction that - as proven by last weekend’s defeat of Lecce - they have a top quality squad at their disposal which can cope just fine with the notable absences. Meanwhile, the Rossoblù are struggling to rediscover the sparkling form which saw them rocket to the top of the table at the start of the season. They now lie seventh, four points behind leaders Napoli, and are without a win in five games (including back to back defeats in their last two outings, against Spezia and Bologna respectively).

Despite their current difficulties, Genoa still remain one of the best sides in the championship. In Gasperini (who cut his teeth in the Juventus youth team set up), they have a top class coach with extremely interesting ideas. He employs an exciting 3-4-3 formation which combines quality and quantity in good measure. The back line bonds the experience of De Rosa and Bega with the youth of Domenico Crisicito, a product of the Bianconeri nursery - currently on loan with the Ligurians - who is making a real name for himself on the left hand side of the defensive trio. The midfield is composed of some important names, with Coppola and Milanetto - both experienced top flight players - patrolling the middle and Rossi and Juric providing the width out on the flanks. But it’s the attack that poses the biggest threat, boasting of players of the calibre of Greco, Adailton and Aurelio. Figueroa is also well worth a mention, a powerful Argentine with experience in La Liga among the ranks of Villareal.

Lucky seven for the Bianconeri?

Six days on from their explosive clash with Genoa, Juventus return to the Olimpico in search of their seventh straight home win. It was a thrilling affair at the Marassi, described by Deschamps as both “great to watch and great to play in”. The Bianconeri carved out numerous chances and at the other end, Buffon was in fine form, saving a penalty and bringing to a halt a wave of opposition attacks - it was a performance befitting of a player who received the Fifpro award for world’s best goalkeeper that very same evening. It was just a shame that Juventus’ advantage, sealed in the 71st minute by a Nedved free-kick, was cancelled out so soon after by Juric’s strike. The point made them overnight leaders but Deschamps’ men lie in second place coming into Saturday’s game, just one point behind Napoli and level with Bologna. In search of an outright lead at the top, the Bianconeri play host to Hellas Verona, who currently lie fourth from bottom, in between Crotone and Vicenza. Despite the gulf between the two sides in the overall standings, Ficcadenti’s outfit are not to be underestimated, having secured more points on their travels than they have done on home soil. Along with Pescara, Verona are the only team not to have claimed three points in front of their home crowd this term, picking up just three draws from seven outings. However, the Gialloblù have faired considerably better away from Verona, with eight of their eleven points this season coming from their travels.
Hellas can boast of a well-drilled line-up and Ficcadenti is not afraid to give space to the most interesting of his home grown players - relatively unknown but excellent at this level - in his 4-3-3 formation.
Midfielders Mazzola and Italiano are without a doubt the best known of Verona’s number, both of them top performers with plenty of experience, while up front Ficcadenti employs Iunco - a reliable left winger - and Cossu, alongside the Brazilian Da Silva. The Gialloblù play simple football, defend well and pose a real threat on the counter-attack.

Medical Bulletin: 11th December

Dr Riccardo Agricola gave us the latest from the treatment room this afternoon, starting with Claudio Marchisio. The midfielder underwent a check-up this morning which confirmed fatigue to the adductor muscle in his left thigh. The player carried out individual work and should be able to resume training with the rest of the squad on Wednesday. Meanwhile, David Trezeguet and Cristiano Zanetti, who carried out regular training with the squad today, have made full recoveries. §

Legrottaglie, Tudor and Marchionni, who continues individual training work, all remain unavailable, along with Giannichedda. The latter underwent scans this morning following the injury sustained to his left calf muscle 20 days ago. Results show that the muscle tear has healed well, although the presence of scar-tissue will delay his return, expected to be a further 20-25 days from now.

It’s back to the Olimpico on Friday night

After making it seven on the trot against Hellas Verona this weekend, Juventus now have their sights set on an eighth consecutive home win. Friday night sees the Bianconeri play host to Cesena, one of the championship’s most consistent performers. It will be the teams’ second meeting of the season after their second round Coppa Italia tie at the “Dino Manuzzi” stadium back in August. Juvetus ran out 2-1 winners that day, with goals from Bojinov and Del Piero, but since then, the Bianconeri aren’t the only ones to have made significant progress. Fully fit and tactically well-versed, both sides are blazing similarly illustrious trails in the championship this year. Just as the Bianconeri’s exemplary season can be attributed to the hard work of Monsieur Deschamps, Fabrizio Castori can be credited with Cesena’s excellent results so far, getting the very best out of the players he has available. There is an almost perfect understanding between the various elements and rarely does one see any changes in key personnel. Castori favours a 4-3-3 featuring high-calibre players such as goalkeeper Turci (formerly of Udinese and Sampdoria), all-action holding midfielder Pestrin and Salvetti, the team’s captain and resident of the left side of midfield. Complementing the physical presence of classic centre-forward and Italian Under-21 Pellè in attack are the pacey duo of Senegalese, Papa Waigo, and former Atalanta man, Lazzari.

Miccoli Very Close To Palermo

The Juventus forward could become a Rosanero player within the next few hours according to the latest transfer speculation coming from Italy.

Fabrizio Miccoli is very close to a move to Palermo as Juventus are trying to find a new destination for the forward who spent his last two seasons in Portugal with Benfica.

According to the latest reports, President Zamparini will pay the Old Lady 5 million Euros for the small but technical forward who has done extremely well with Benfica in the past two years.

Palermo are set to lose David Di Michele who is heading towards Parma and therefore require a new forward upfront. Miccoli is seen as the ideal candidate to help the Rosanero maintain their top position status in Serie A.

In the meantime, the Sicilian side is also concluding the negotiation for the Lazio player, Pasquale Foggia as was confirmed by Zamparini to 'Radioradio'.

"After Jankovic I will also sign Miccoli and Foggia, and I will build a Palermo side stronger than last year," declared confidently the volcanic President.

Boumsong Ready To Stay On

The French defender revealed to L'Equipe his intention of remaining with Juventus despite the competition he will find in his role next season.

With the Bianconeri linked to various important central defenders, it must not be easy for Jean-Alain Boumsong knowing that there is not too much trust around him.

However, the French international vowed that he will fight on to prove his worth, despite a disappointing first season with the Old Lady in Serie B.

"Milito can come, after all he might not be the only one to arrive," declared the former Newcastle United player.

"In any case, I will remain in Turin as I have no intention of leaving."

Juventus are currently linked to three central defenders: Real Zaragoza's Gabriel Milito, Porto's Pepe and Palermo's Andrea Barzagli.

According to the latest transfer speculation, the Bianconeri will surely land one of these players, and possibly even two of them.

Ranieri and Iaquinta: “A good start”

Two different line-ups in 90 minutes, five goals and many things to analyze with his staff. Claudio Ranieri talks about the first outing of his new Juventus with a smile: “I'm happy with how the guys played; the new ones and the old ones. Things improved in the second half, also because it was really very hot at the beginning, and the players first on the pitch suffered because of this. I'd like to single out Salihamidzic and Boumsong's performances”.

Vincenzo Iaquinta is satisfied too. The striker stayed on the pitch for forty-five minutes, enough time to get a feel for the new shirt and be celebrated once more by his supporters, but not enough to score the goal he was hoping for. Despite this, he was left with a good impression: “I'm happy all the same. We're working really hard here and it takes time to get into the best shape. In any case, I had a good impression again today, seeing all the affection and everybody's enthusiasm”.

Blasi Undecided Between Monaco And Napoli

The Juventus midfielder is not part of Ranieri's plans, but has not yet decided his future despite attracting the interest of many clubs.

Manuele Blasi has less than three weeks to find a new team as the former Fiorentina player has no future at Juventus.

The midfielder is wanted by some clubs both in Italy and abroad, with Napoli and Monaco leading the chase for the Italian player. However, according to the latest speculation, Blasi has not yet decided in which team he will be playing next season.

On Monday the Juventus player will be in Monaco to discuss a possible loan transfer with the French club, but Blasi would prefer to remain in Italy.

For this reason, Napoli are seriously taking into consideration the idea of signing Blasi on a co-ownership deal, a solution which would please the Old Lady.

Still, Blasi is not certain yet on the idea of playing for the Azzurri, but a final decision will most likely be taken following the meeting with Monaco.

Juventus - Livorno

After a year in Serie B, Juventus make their highly-anticipated return to the Italian top flight with a home clash against Livorno. With Claudio Ranieri at the helm it is likely that the Bianconeri will have made a few new friends after the shame of Calciopoli, but it remains to be seen if they have a good enough squad to challenge for a Champions League place, let alone the Scudetto.

Surprisingly, there are still plenty of familiar faces in Turin from the Old Lady’s last Serie A campaign, with Gigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi, Pavel Nedved, David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero all likely to be in the starting XI after playing some part in the club’s last top-flight fixture against Reggina 15 months ago. Die-hard Juve fans will notice that Camoranesi has changed his squad number from 16 to eight over the summer.

There are also plenty of debutants, however, as Zdenek Grygera, Jorge Andrade, Domenico Criscito, Antonio Nocerino and Sergio Almiron are all tipped to start for the first time in the famous black and white jersey. Fellow new boy Tiago could join them, but it’s touch and go whether or not he will be handed a starting berth as he is currently struggling for full fitness. Raffaele Palladino and Vincenzo Iaquinta will both be on the bench, offering good alternatives for the former Chelsea tactician.

Livorno, meanwhile, enter their first Serie A campaign since their top-flight return in 2004 without the services of star striker and talisman Cristiano Lucarelli. But despite offloading the burly hitman, boss Nando Orsi potentially has even more firepower in the shape of new striking duo Diego Tristan and Francesco Tavano. The former certainly has a decent enough career record against Juventus having played against them in the Champions League for Deportivo La Coruna on numerous occasions.

The game also marks Giuliano Giannichedda’s return to the Stadio Olimpico after he exited the Turin giants to get regular first-team football in Tuscany, but he will have his hands full in the middle of the park. The reunited Filippini twins will be on hand to provide some support, while new boy Nico Pulzetti will have to rediscover the winning feeling quickly after he endured a losing season in Serie B with Verona last term which saw the Gialloblu relegated to the third tier. Vikash Dhorasoo won’t be playing any part though as the ex-Milan midfielder is absent with an ankle injury.

Since returning to Italy’s top Division three years ago Livorno are yet to taste victory against Juventus, with three heavy losses and a draw to their name. Yet two of those defeats were at the Stadio Delle Alpi, whereas this clash will be played at the Stadio Olimpico where they managed to nick a point from Torino last term. It would take a brave man to bet on them doing the same to Juve, but since when has calcio been straightforward?

Keep an eye on: Francesco Tavano (Livorno) – The Italian ace was on fire in his last full Serie A season with Empoli, but it will be interesting to see if he can rediscover that form after disappointing spells with Valencia and Roma.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Grygera, Andrade, Criscito, Chiellini; Camoranesi, Almiron, Nocerino, Nedved; Trezeguet, Del Piero

Livorno (probable): Amelia; Grandoni, Knezevic, Galante, Pasquale; A Filippini, Pulzetti, Giannichedda, E Filippini; Tristan, Tavano

Cagliari - Juventus
Stadio Sant'Elia - Live on Five!

After a sparkling seasonal debut, Juventus travel to Sardinia hoping to underline the point that they are serious Scudetto challengers. But the Stadio Sant’Elia has always been a hostile ground for the Old Lady and Cagliari will be up for the battle.

In Week 1 the Bianconeri destroyed Livorno 5-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in what was the perfect start for Claudio Ranieri’s men. However, the Serie A campaign as a whole will be much more problematic for the Piemontesi. And if they want to challenge Inter, Roma and Milan for the title then these are the games they need to win.

Cagliari had a dream start to their campaign thanks to a somewhat surprising 2-0 win at the Stadio San Paolo against Napoli. The Isolani, who are undeniably one of the major candidates to be relegated, have shown great potential and this game could represent another chance for them to shock.

Juventus boss Ranieri is likely to keep faith with last week’s line-up. At the back, Hasan Salihamidzic will once again be preferred to Frenchman Jonathan Zebina while Zlatan Grygera is still injured.

Wide midfielder Mauro Camoranesi is not ready to play the full 90 minutes, so the talented youngster Antonio Nocerino should start on the right flank. Newly signed Tiago will have to spend his second consecutive week on the bench seeing as Sergio Almiron has instantly won the faith of Ranieri.

Despite last week’s sensational performance, Vincenzo Iaquinta is not guaranteed a place in the starting XI and will have to sit on the bench.

Rossoblu Coach Marco Giampaolo can feel the pressure on him lifting and the three points earned in Naples were an encouraging first step for the Sardinians. In defence Paolo Bianco should be selected again, while Michele Canini could take Diego Lopez’s place.

Striker Joaquin Larrivey may again not be available as the paperwork over his transfer from Argentina has hit problems. Flamboyant winger Pasquale Foggia, who was the star of the show against Napoli, will start from the right flank but may join Robert Acquafresca and Alessandro Matri in attack.

Keep an eye on: David Trezeguet (Juventus) – The French bomber hasn’t lost his scoring instinct. The hat-trick he netted against Livorno confirmed that he is in pole position for the Capocannoniere title.

Last season: Not played

Form guide: Cagliari (- - - - W) Juventus (- - - - W)

Cagliari (probable): Fortin; Ferri, Canini, Bianco, Del Grosso; Foggia, Parola, Conti, Fini; Matri, Acquafresca

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Salihamidzic, Andrade, Criscito, Chiellini; Nocerino, C.Zanetti, Almiron, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet
